Draw fence lines

Keep the fence lines on your map accurate and up to date using the Draw and edit tool.

There are two types of fence line in FarmIQ:

This topic will explain how to draw fence lines. you can also merge paddocksmove fence lines or remove land from your farm.

Once you understand these tools, you can use them in combination when drawing your farm map.

Draw exterior fence lines

Draw exterior fence lines when you need to add a new paddock outside of your existing farm boundary. You can draw a new paddock that extends out from your boundary, or one that is completely outside of your existing boundary.

Exterior fence lines can only be drawn outside of your existing farm boundary. If you want to draw fences within your boundary, use Interior fence lines.

To draw a fence line that extends outside your farm:

  • When drawing on the mapzoom in for a closer view of what you're doing.
  • Switching to the Topo map background before you begin may help you see some land features as you draw.
  1. Click Draw & edit in the bottom bar of the Farm map.
  2. In the side panel, under Paddocks, click Draw exterior fence line.

  3. Draw the fence line on the map:
    • Click inside the farm boundary to place the first point, then click the existing boundary where your new fence line will start.
      • Your mouse pointer will have a blue dot around its tip.
    • Place further points wherever the line changes direction. 
      • To move points on the map, click and drag them.
      • To add a new point on an existing line, click the line.
      • To delete a point, click the dustbin in the side panel.

      • To edit the coordinates of a point, click the edit pencil Edit pencil in the side panel.
        • To save the coordinates, click the tick Save tick mark. Click the back arrow Cancel back arrow to cancel.
      • To start again, click Back.
    • To finish, place a final point within the existing farm boundary.

      • The first and last point of your line must be inside the farm boundary.
      • You can only draw one area outside of the boundary with a single fence line. You cannot cross out of the boundary in multiple places.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Enter a Paddock name and select a Land type.
    • Paddock names must be unique.
  6. Complete the other details if required.
  7. Click Save.


To draw a new paddock completely outside your farm click here
To draw a new paddock completely outside your farm:

  3. Draw the fence line as a shape:
    • Click on the map to place a point where you want the boundary of the shape to start.
      • Your mouse pointer will have a blue dot around its tip.
    • Place further points wherever the boundary changes direction.
      • To move points on the map, click and drag them.
      • To add a new point on an existing line, click the line.
      • To delete a point, click the dustbin in the side panel.

    • Close the shape by clicking on the first point.

  4. Click Next.
  5. Enter a Paddock name and Land type.
    • Paddock names must be unique.
  6. Complete the other details if required.
  7. Click Save.

Draw interior fence lines

Draw interior fence lines to split areas within your farm boundary into separate paddocks, or when you need to draw a fence around something completely within a paddock – for example, a fenced-off hazard.

If you want to draw fence lines outside of your farm boundary, use exterior fence lines.

  • When drawing on the map, zoom in for a closer view of what you're doing.
  • Switching to the Topo map view may help you see some land features as you draw.
  • One fence line cannot be drawn through multiple paddocks. You can only draw the section of fence within a single paddock. 
  • If you are splitting your farm into paddocks for the first time:
    • it is easiest to start at the edges of the farm boundary and then work inwards, like a jigsaw puzzle.
    • It can be faster to split your farm into large chunks, then split those chunks into the individual paddocks, rather than drawing paddocks one at a time.
  1. Click Draw & edit in the bottom bar of the Farm map.
  2. In the side panel, under Paddocks, click Draw interior fence line.

  3. Draw the fence line:
    • Click the existing fence line where your new fence line will start.
      • Your mouse pointer will have a blue dot around its tip.
    • Place further points wherever the line changes direction. 
      • To move points on the map, click and drag them.
      • To add a new point on an existing line, click the line.
      • To delete a point, click the dustbin in the side panel.

      • To edit the coordinates of a point, click the edit pencil Edit pencil in the side panel.

      • To start again, click Back.
    • Lines extend out from the end points until they meet an existing fence line.

      • If you save, these lines will be drawn as part of your fence line, as long as they don't cross over each other.
    • To finish, click the existing fence line where the new fence ends.
  4. Click Next.
    • If your new fence line has crossed an existing interior fence line, select the paddock you would like to split.
      • Select the paddock you want by clicking on it or by choosing from the dropdown list in the side panel.
        • Paddocks you can select will have a dark outline on the map.
        • When you select a paddock, it will be outlined in green.
      • Once you've selected the correct paddock, click Next again.
  5. Confirm the Interior paddock details for the new paddocks.
    One new paddock will be coloured orange and the other yellow. The paddock you are entering details for will have a dark outline.
    • Enter the Paddock name, Land type and any other details for the orange paddock.
    • Click Next Paddock.
    • Enter the Paddock nameLand type and any other details for the yellow paddock.
      • Paddock names must be unique.
  6. Click Save.

    • Click on the map to place a point where you want the boundary of the shape to start.

    • Place further points wherever the boundary changes direction.
      • To move points on the map, click and drag them.
      • To add a new point on an existing line, click the line.
      • To delete a point, click the dustbin in the side panel.

      • To start again, click Back.
    • Lines will extend from the first and most recent points to the existing fence line. Ignore them.
    • Close the shape by clicking on the first point.
      Lines connect a series on number points placed around an area of trees on the map. Thinner lines extend from the first and last points to the existing fence line. The mouse pointer is hovering over point 1, which is highlighted.
  4. Click Next.
    • Enter the Paddock name, Land type and any other details for the new paddock. It will be coloured orange.
      • Paddock names must be unique.
    • The rest of the original paddock will keep the name and details of the original paddock.
  5. Click Save.
