Draw features

You can draw features, such as buildings, water lines, tanks, pits and tracks on your farm map. To make sure the map isn't too cluttered you can display just the features you need for the job at hand.

Watch this video for an overview of how to draw features on the FarmIQ map:

Feature groups

In FarmIQ features are managed in feature groups. So, for example, if you want to mark all your troughs on the map, you can add a feature group and call it Troughs, then in that feature group, you draw and name (or number) all the troughs at the correct locations.

Default feature groups

There are some default feature groups at Farm level. Use these groups if you are logging effluent runs, recording pivot irrigation or recording weather and climate data against a particular weather station. These groups have special characteristics:

Feature type Map shape Colour Example
Effluent runs Line Colour cannot be changed

Irrigators

- You can only draw

  pivot irrigators.

Disc Each pivot can be a different colour
Weather stations Dot Colour can be changed

Manage feature groups and features

Add a new feature group and draw features

Information
  • If you have not already added the feature group for a feature you want to draw, you need to do that first, then draw the feature.
  • If you are drawing a line feature and related dot feature, for example a water line and troughs, draw the dots first. Then, when you draw the line, you will find that the line "snaps" to the dot when your cursor is close to it.
  • You can position features on the map by eye or enter the exact GPS co-orinates. If you are drawing by eye, zoom in on the map so that the area you are working on is easy to see.

Weather stations

In FarmIQ you can associate paddocks with a weather station automatically or manually.

Associating paddocks to the most representative weather station is useful because it allows you to get the most accurate weather data for each paddock in the Paddock history.

Automatically associating paddocks might be the best option if you have a flat farm with no weather barriers.  How FarmIQ automatically associates paddocks with a weather station depends on how many weather stations you have.

If you have...
1 weather station all the paddocks on the farm are associated with that weather station.
more than 1  weather station   each paddock is associated to the weather station that is closest to it as the crow flies.

If automatic association does not suit the weather patterns or topography of your farm you can associate paddocks to a weather station manually.
