FarmIQ allows you to record all your stock activities and store them securely for reference and reporting.

Recording animal information

There are two methods of recording animal information in FarmIQ:

  • with a stock reconciliation and stock list or
  • by describing stock.

This topic explains these methods and their implications.

Which FarmIQ pack are you using?

Everyday FarmIQ

If you are on the Everyday FarmIQ pack, you can only record animal events by describing stock.

If you upgrade to Performance or Enterprise, you can switch from using describe stock to using the FarmIQ stock reconciliation. Please contact FarmIQ support for more information

Performance and Enterprise packs

If you are on a Performance or Enterprise pack, you can choose which method to use to record animal information in FarmIQ. It is possible to switch from using one method to the other but you should discuss this decision with Customer support.

Watch these videos for an overview of the options you have when recording animal events in the Performance and Enterprise packs:

With a stock reconciliation and stock list

To maintain a stock reconcilliation and stock list in FarmIQ, you add animals to your farm, by stock class and tally or by using an indicator file for EID tagged animals. You also assign them to a mob and paddock. When you record activities for the animals, you identify them:

When moving stock onto or off the farm, the tally you enter will update the running tally that the System maintains. When recording on-farm events, you cannot enter tallies that are greater than the number of animals in the mobs or paddocks you have selected.

All activities recorded with an EID tag file or by VID tag are added to the individual animal history for the animals on that file.

Without a stock reconciliation or animal history - Describing stock

If you do not need FarmIQ to keep track of the exact number of animals on your farm in a stock reconciliation, you can record animal activities by describing stock.

This means that when you record animal activities, you select the stock class (sex and age) and breed of the animals and enter the tally. You can say what mob the animals are in, this is optional.

The System does not keep track of the tally of animals in each trait, mob or paddock on your farm.

You cannot use EID files or VID tags in animal events. For weighing events you can use a weight file but no EIDs will be used.

Deciding which method to use to record animal information

Things to consider when deciding how to record animal information:

Method  Consider:

With stock reconciliation.

You can use a combination of Tally, EID file and VID number.

 Tally
  • You only need the stock tally and event details to record information.
  • You do not need EID equipment.
  • Some reporting available.
  • The information you collect is limited, because you cannot record history against individual animals, only against mobs or paddock groups.
  • You cannot compare the performance of different groups of animals.
 EID file
  • Requires EID reading and recording equipment that is compatible with the FarmIQ  System.
  • You must read the animal's tags.
  • You can record and compare the performance of individuals or groups of animals.
  • All reporting is available.
  • You can track an individual animal's history.
VID number
  • A convenient way to record events, such as deaths, for small numbers of animals.
  • You can only use VIDs if they have been linked to the animal's EID in the System.
Without a stock reconciliation -Describing stock
  • You only need the stock traits, stock tally and event details to record information.
  • You do not need EID equipment.
  • You can record and compare the performance of trait groups.
  • Most reporting is available.
  • You do not maintain a stock reconciliation or stock list in FarmIQ.
  • The information you collect is limited, because you cannot record history against individual animals, only against trait groups or mobs.
